RAIL STRIKES LESS LIKELY, BUT UNIONS STILL SLAM BIDEN’S NEW PROPOSAL

Tensions rise as rail groups push for their right to strike after President Joe Biden asked Congress to enact legislation focused on the prevention of possible rail strikes by imposing the deal presented in September. That deal does not address one of the major concerns voiced by the unions which is the need for adequate paid sick leave.

President Biden and numerous business groups are urging Congress to act before December 9th, the day a strike could occur. The agreement under review includes one additional day of paid personal leave and three days a year for medical care. The unions requested fifteen paid sick days. On Tuesday, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division (BMWED), whose workers voted to reject the proposed agreement, issued a statement that the new proposed legislation “both denies Railroad Workers their right to strike while also denying them of the benefit they would likely otherwise obtain if they were not denied their right to strike.”
