Panama Canal Authority Extends Water Conservation (UPDATE)

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) will extend water-saving efforts by 10 months if current rainfall trends persist. The decision is in response to the historically low water levels in Gatun Lake, a key water source for the canal. Existing restrictions have reduced daily vessel transits from 34-36 to 32, underscoring the need for careful water management.

Experts continue to raise concerns about below-average rainfall and high temperatures and have predicted its continuation until early September, further hindering a quick recovery of Gatun Lake’s water levels even during its peak wet season.

The ACP’s proactive extension of water conservation measures aims to ensure uninterrupted canal operations by closely monitoring weather conditions and the lake’s status.

Noatum will continue to monitor and release updates as needed throughout the development of the Panama Canal situation.
