NCBFAA Leads Effort for Trade Continuity Amid Potential Oct. 1st Shutdown

The National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (“NCBFAA”) is leading an industry initiative to plan for a potential government shutdown starting on October 1st. The association is working with trade groups to coordinate strategies with Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) and other agencies to ensure smooth trade operations at ports. The NCBFAA is advocating for:

  1. Private sector communication with the CBP “War Room”;
  2. Partner Government Agency (“PGA”) presence in CBP “War Room”;
  3. CBP HQ, Ports, and Centers of Excellence and Expertise coordination to proactively avoid breakdowns in communication experienced with other shutdowns;
  4. CBP daily briefings with the private sector;
  5. Flow of trade both directions – assurance that operations related to import and export are funded; and
  6. Considering All tangential trade functions as essential.

NCBFAA sought member input recently regarding the potential shutdown. Specifically, NCBFAA asked for feedback on past shutdown-related challenges and anticipated issues in today’s trade environment. NCBFAA aims to lead the effort to gather information for the industry’s benefit during this situation.
