Mexico Update – New Tariffs on All Imports from Mexico Suspended

On Friday, June 7, 2019, the President of the United States announced that the proposed 5 percent Mexico tariffs would be “indefinitely suspended” as Mexico has “agreed to take strong measures” to curb the flow of Central America migrants into the United States.

In a U.S.-Mexico Joint Declaration, the two countries outlined steps to be taken to curb irregular migration, along with steps to address asylum-seekers. In the event that  Mexico does not follow through with its commitments, the President left the door open to impose tariffs again in the future stating, “we can always go back to our previous, very profitable, position of Tariffs.”

These tariffs were originally proposed May 30, 2019, to address illegal immigration from Mexico. The initial tariff increase of 5 percent, scheduled for June 10, 2019, was to be followed with additional increases in subsequent months. (Refer to MIQ Supply Chain Alert dated May 31, 2019.)
