ILWU & PMA Ratify New Six-Year Coastwide Contract

Noatum Logistics is pleased to announce a pivotal development in the maritime industry’s labor landscape. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has reported an overwhelming ratification of the new six-year coastwide contract with the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA). After a challenging 13-month negotiation period, ILWU President Willie Adams expressed gratitude for the support that enabled this successful outcome. A resounding 75% majority of ILWU members have approved the new contract, signaling a significant milestone in labor negotiations. Here are the key takeaways.

Key Highlights:

Contract Details: The new contract will be effective until July 1, 2028, replacing the previous agreement that expired on July 1, 2022.

Reclaiming Discretionary Cargo: Ratification is expected to result in the return of discretionary cargo to West Coast ports, as shippers had diverted cargo to the East and Gulf coasts during labor disruptions.

Salary Increases and Bonuses: The contract entails a substantial 32% salary increase over six years, retroactively applied from July 1, 2022. Additionally, ILWU members will receive a $70 million one-time bonus as a recognition of their dedication during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Certification and the Future: The ILWU’s coast balloting committee has officially certified the voting results, ensuring the contract’s legitimacy. Industry stakeholders anticipate improved stability and prosperity as this agreement takes effect.
