ILWU and PMA Tentative Deal Reached on “Key Issues”

Yesterday, April 20th, the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) announced that it had reached a tentative agreement with the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA). Given that this announcement follows the shut down around Easter, many are pleased to see progress being made. At this time, there has been no statement released regarding the specific topics that have been agreed to besides describing those topics as “certain key issues”.

Although this is great news that we are excited to share with you, there is still tension between the PMA and ILWU Local 13 at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Yesterday, the PMA released the following statement:

“While significant progress has been achieved in coastwise contract negotiations, several key issues remain unresolved. Meanwhile, work actions led by ILWU Local 13 at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach continued to disrupt some operations at key marine terminals today. The Union is deliberately conducting inspections that are not routine, unscheduled, and done in a way that disrupt terminal operations.”
