Noatum Logistics brings you the latest developments on the ongoing West Coast Port Strike, which is causing disruptions to operations at various Canadian ports. Here are the key highlights:
- BCMEA’s Revised Proposal: The British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) has presented a revised proposal to address skilled trades shortages and ILWU Canada’s demand for expanded jurisdiction. The proposal offers a potential solution by allowing ILWU Canada to take on new work outside its usual jurisdiction.
- Impacted Terminals at the Port of Vancouver: Labor actions have affected nine out of twenty-nine marine cargo terminals at the Port of Vancouver. ILWU Canada members are protesting cargo and container handling sites, including Centerm, Deltaport, Fraser Surrey, and Vanterm container terminals.
- CBSA’s Advisory: The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) advises marine carriers not to transmit the conveyance arrival certification message (CACM) until vessel arrival, berthing, and discharge at the port are confirmed. This measure aims to minimize disruptions caused by uncertain vessel movements during the strike.
- CN’s Mitigation Measures: CN, a major rail transportation company, is working to minimize disruptions to West Coast port supply chains. They have implemented embargoes on carload traffic destined for affected ports and suspended international services to British Columbia ports. Export capacity from CN’s inland terminals has been increased for the Ports of Montreal, Halifax, and Saint John.
- CPKC Terminal Restrictions and Alternative Drop-off Yard: CPKC’s Winnipeg terminal is not accepting export loads and prebilled empties destined for the Port of Vancouver. However, an alternative drop-off option is available at the private container yard.
Noatum Logistics will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available.
