Is your cargo considered dangerous?

hazardous substances

When transporting dangerous products, we must first understand what is considered by international law as dangerous. Regulations for the transportation of hazardous products have been issued by a special agency, this is the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

What are dangerous goods (DG)?

Any substance or object that offers an unreasonably high risk, such as the potential to damage people, property, or the environment while being transported, is considered a dangerous good and must be identified, packaged, and treated with special care throughout handling and shipment.

How are hazardous goods categorized?

Whether a product is considered harmful depends on several factors, including its flammability, ingredient concentration, and shipping method.

Dangerous goods, usually referred to as hazardous goods, are items or substances that have the potential to pose serious harm and that typically call for extra care during transportation. Based on the kind of risk they pose, they are divided into hazard classes:

Class 1 includes explosives, fireworks, and flares.

Class 2 includes compressed gases like propane and helium.

Class 3 includes flammable liquids like gasoline and diesel fuel.

Class 4 includes flammable solids like matches and candles.

Class 5 includes oxidizers and organic peroxides like hydrogen peroxide.

Class 6 includes poisonous materials like arsenic and lead.

Class 7 includes radioactive materials.

Class 8 includes corrosives like battery acid and drain cleaner.

How are hazardous items shipped?

The Hazardous Materials Regulations require the shipper to appropriately categorize, package, mark, and label the item to indicate the hazard before giving a dangerous commodity to a carrier for shipping.
