European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) 2023/115

The upcoming implementation of the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) 2023/115, also known as the Deforestation Regulation, was originally due to come into force on 30 December 2024. However, the Council has agreed to an extension and its application will be:

  • 30 December 2025, for large operators and traders
  • 30 June 2026, for micro and small businesses

This regulation aims to ensure that products imported, exported and marketed in the European Union do not contribute to deforestation or ecosystem degradation worldwide.

Sectors affected:

  • Palm oil
  • Coffee
  • Cocoa
  • Wood products
  • Rubber
  • Soybeans
  • Paper and cardboard products
  • Bovine meat (frozen, fresh, chilled) / Bovine hides

The EUDR establishes strict traceability and transparency requirements for these goods, meaning that companies will have to demonstrate that their products come from sustainable supply chains. This measure represents a significant step towards protecting forests and promoting responsible business practices.
Companies operating in these sectors will have to comply with new due diligence obligations, ensuring that their products do not come from illegally deforested areas or areas that have suffered forest degradation.
