April freight market report

Optimism among container shipping lines, which has been in short supply in recent months, is increasing after months of rate erosion and abundant capacity, while global air cargo volumes showed some sign of relief in March, as volumes registered their smallest drop.

With full ships, roll-pools, stabilising spot rates and a bullish charter market, the container shipping lines are getting a spring in their step.

Airfreight rates have stablished and increased in some markets, but belly-hold capacity continues to increase and overall volumes remain low.

Despite a higher supply of road freight capacity and a drop in diesel prices in the first quarter, these developments have not been reflected in overland freight prices, as rates in general have fallen only slightly since the beginning of the year.
