Yesterday,\u00a0May 3rd<\/sup>, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and employers of the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach reached an agreement about the manning requirements for non-automated terminals. What does this mean? This agreement will effectively prevent any laborer caused shutdowns like those last month in that area. This agreement will also reduce tensions between the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and the ILWU, therefore increasing the likelihood of a coastwide agreement being signed. Given that the contract negotiations between PMA and ILWU have been going on for nearly a year, any forward momentum is encouraging. Sources close to the negotiations say yesterday\u2019s agreement could open the door for a deal on a tentative coastwide contract in the next couple of weeks. It should also help restore some confidence at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach after the shutdowns in April.
