{"id":13915,"date":"2019-06-04T07:28:34","date_gmt":"2019-06-04T12:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.miq.com\/?p=13915"},"modified":"2019-06-04T07:28:34","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T12:28:34","slug":"may-2019-manufacturing-ism-report-on-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.noatumlogistics.com\/us\/may-2019-manufacturing-ism-report-on-business\/","title":{"rendered":"May 2019 Manufacturing ISM\u00ae Report On Business\u00ae"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforsupplymanagement.org\/ISMReport\/MfgROB.cfm?navItemNumber=31135&amp;SSO=1\">Institute for Supply Management \u2013 June 3, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Economic activity in the <strong>manufacturing sector<\/strong> expanded in May, and the overall <strong>economy grew<\/strong> for the 121st consecutive month, say the nation\u2019s supply executives in the latest <strong>Manufacturing ISM<\/strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><strong> Report On Business<\/strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13916 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.miq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ISM-May-2018-for-Post-04Jun2019.jpg\" alt=\"May 2019 Manufacturing ISM\u00ae Report\" width=\"970\" height=\"691\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The report was issued today by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> (ISM<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee: \u201cThe May PMI<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> registered 52.1 percent, a decrease of 0.7 percentage point from the April reading of 52.8 percent. The New Orders Index registered 52.7 percent, an increase of 1 percentage point from the April reading of 51.7 percent. The Production Index registered 51.3 percent, a 1-percentage point decrease compared to the April reading of 52.3 percent. The Employment Index registered 53.7 percent, an increase of 1.3 percentage points from the April reading of 52.4 percent. The Supplier Deliveries Index registered 52 percent, a 2.6-percentage point decrease from the April reading of 54.6 percent. The Inventories Index registered 50.9 percent, a decrease of 2 percentage points from the April reading of 52.9 percent. The Prices Index registered 53.2 percent, a 3.2-percentage point increase from the April reading of 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComments from the panel reflect continued expanding business strength, but at soft levels consistent with the early-2016 expansion. <strong>Demand<\/strong> expansion continued, with the New Orders Index strengthening, but remaining in the low 50s, the Customers\u2019 Inventories Index remaining at a \u2018too low\u2019 level, and the Backlog of Orders Index contracting for the first time since January 2017. <strong>Consumption<\/strong> (production and employment) continued to expand, resulting in a combined PMI<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> contribution of 0.3 percentage point. <strong>Inputs<\/strong> \u2014 expressed as supplier deliveries, inventories and imports \u2014 were lower this month, primarily due to inventory softening and supplier\u2019s continuing to deliver faster, resulting in a combined 4.6-percentage point reduction in the Supplier Deliveries and Inventories indexes. Imports contracted for the second straight month. Overall, inputs reflect supply chains\u2019 ability to respond faster and indicate that supply managers are closely watching inventories. Prices remain at a relatively stable level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRespondents expressed concern with the escalation in the U.S.-China trade standoff, but overall sentiment remained predominantly positive. The PMI<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> continues to reflect slowing expansion,\u201d says Fiore.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 18 manufacturing industries, 11 reported growth in May, in the following order: Printing &amp; Related Support Activities; Furniture &amp; Related Products; Plastics &amp; Rubber Products; Textile Mills; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Electrical Equipment, Appliances &amp; Components; Computer &amp; Electronic Products; Chemical Products; Food, Beverage &amp; Tobacco Products; Nonmetallic Mineral Products; and Machinery.
